Bring Your Own Lunch

Bring Your Own Lunch

by Bruce Lansky

Don’t eat school lunches—
not even a lick.
They might make you nauseous.
They might make you sick.
Just take a small bite
andyou’ll start to feel ill.
If the veggies don’t get you,
the meatloaf sure will.

This poem hit home for me. Back in the day (as in since I first started going to school), there has yet to be a school that has good lunches. Even in elementary school, the lunches always made people sick. I remember that the meatloaf actually was the worst meal, which is funny because that's what it says in this poem. I chose this poem not only because it related to me because of the history I've had with terrible lunches at school, but also because of its tone. It is an upbeat poem and isn't serious at all. Too often (especially during high school and now in college) we have to focus on serious poems and try and pull out some hidden meaning. This gets tiresome and boring, and a lot of the time, it ruins my liking of the poem. This poem is nice because it doesn't have some hidden meaning and says what it needs to in a happy and cheerful way.

  1. This poem reminds me of a few things:

my junior year, people hated our school lunches so much that there was this underground group that started handing out "pack or starve" slips to everybody. Nobody bought any lunch for a week. It was amazing! Plus, the principle got really PO'd.

Try to find "Lunchlady Land" by Adam Sandler and Chris Farley. It's an SNL skit from the 90's that fits this poem perfectly!

  2. Boy this is questionable.. My school lunches were very good. Everyone (besides the picky girls) would eat them. I mean some of them were a little bit gross, but most of them were good. I'm talking about people would fight over others leftovers.

  3. I really enjoyed this poem. Fortunately, I never have to worry about the meatloaf :) But I do know what you mean. I am absolutely a fan of the fun poems with no hidden meetings.

  4. Oh my gosh this it true! The school lunches in my middle school were awful. A cautionary tale: NOONE EAT THE SALAD CHICKEN AT FRESH. I know people who have gotten food poisioning from that. ew.

  5. School lunches are the worst! There are so many horror stories that I have heard. Some of ours were ok, but we always knew which lunches to avoid.

  7. This poem was not really true for my school. The lunches were ok, I still ate them because I was too lazy to pack one.

  8. I think everyone can relate to this. In high school you sometimes poke at the food and wonder, what could this be?

  10. Eww we all had extremely gross lunches, especially as children. I was always happy as could be when my mom packed my lunch for me!

  11. My school actually had nice lunches. The chicken tender wrap was probably one of the greatest things I've ever eaten.
